Solar Power Here and Now
Battery Backup Power Systems You now can have a tuned up, silent, reliable battery backup system to challenge your electric bill. Electricity at cheaper rates can be stored in a battery bank to be used when it is more expensive or not available. Solar Costa Rica's staff can design the right system to meet your requirements. These systems fit perfectly with a grid connected hybrid Solar Power System to give you the ultimate energy autonomy. Our systems use the grid to make sure that your batteries stay fully charged, ready for the next day. Typical Battery Backup System A typical battery backup system will consist of these components: 1) A battery bank which stores electricity from charging from Solar Panels or the Grid. Please see our web pages about batteries 2) An inverter/charger which will charge your battery bank when the grid is available and provide crucial 120/240V AC power when the grid is down. There is an automatic transfer switch that in microseconds selects the available power. This is the backup function. 3) Peak Rate Interface System (PRIS) is designed for areas where the variable rate structure is available from you electric utility and you would need a digital ‘smart’ meter that the utility will install for you. We can then install a timed change over switch which switches the 'loads' (electricity consuming devices) from the grid to the inverter during the higher rate price times during the day. The inverter uses the lower cost energy that is saved in the batteries. All this is so you can run on batteries during the most costly times of the day while charging the batteries with the lower cost middle-of-the-night electricity. You will save a lot of money during a year by switching back and forth between the batteries and the grid

What does it mean? If you add the 13% tax and another 1% for other misc charges you end up paying US $.04 a Killowatt Hr in the middle of the night and $.24 a killowatt her during peak rate times. 4) (Optional) Solar Power System mounted on thr roof which charges the batteries when solar energy is available. This is not necessary for the battery backup system to work, but will greatly extend the amount of time the batteries can supply power to the house without the grid. This starts the process for you to become an Owner Power Provider (OPP).
The backup system could supply power to most of the loads for a short time in the house or just to selected important loads, depending on the requirements of the user. Generally, the more loads that are connected, the larger the inverter and battery bank is required. For more information or to request a site visit or quote, please call or e-mail us. |
